Fab Lab

FINAL YEAR STUDIO WORK TUTORED BY JOHN COMPARELLI, PETER CLASH, LUCY INDER, SANAA SHAIKH, ROBIN WILSON AND ELENA MARCO.

LOCATED IN SHARPNESS, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, ENGLAND..

PROJECT SELECTED TO BE EXHIBITED IN THE
UWE ARCHITECTURE GRADUATE SHOW IN CANDID ARTS TRUST IN LONDON.

Sharpness (Gloucestershire, UK) shows a lack of facilities and social spaces for its community, which is segregated by private industrial wastelands. It is this lack of connection that inspires this project, taking advantage of all this existing space by transforming it for, with and by the community. The proposed building is a ‘Shell’ where the community can develop their creations and autonomy. It allocates a laboratory of digital fabrication (Fab Lab) for common use.

COLLECTIVE BUILDING

self-built new homes added progressively as the community grows, with CNC-vernacular structures.

MEETING SPACES

encourage mutual support with shared spaces: parks, plazas and other meeting spaces.

PRODUCTION SOVEREIGNTY

allow self production through the Fab Lab as well as favor local food production.

LOCAL ECONOMY

providing new job opportunities within the community.

SELF-MANAGEMENT

stimulate neighborhood management of their own affairs and needs.

CONNECTIVITY

new walking and bike paths, new CNC bridge to connect both sides of the canal.

GENERATOR BIG SCALE: THE SHELL OF THE COMMONS

The FAB LAB allocated in THE SHELL OF THE COMMONS will allow the regeneration of Sharpness itself. It will provide the space and machinery needed to “parasite” Sharpness with CNC structures and homes, allowing a democratization of production and public space.

GENERATOR SMALL SCALE: FAB LAB MACHINES

The CNC machine will allow the self-production of the different parts needed to build THE SHELL OF THE COMMONS (FAB LAB) and the rest of the CNC structures and homes.

“THE SHELL”

CNC structure with internal scaffolding layout. Allocating computer areas, 3d printers, conference areas and a coffee shop.

“THE WAVE”

CNC structure with internal scaffolding to help during construction and provide levels and flexibilitly. Allocating CNC machines.

ARTISTIC RESIDENCES

space for artists and designers to stay in Sharpness developing a project.

MEETING SPACES

encourage mutual support and self organization of “The Shell”.

REUSED INFRASTRUCTURE

“parasite” an old industrial shed transforming it into the Fab Lab.

BIKE REPAIR CENTER

encourage bike use providing a center where to learn how to repair your own bike.

3 WORKSHOPS

3 spaces covering different needs: wood workshop, metal workshop, “clean” workshop.

STORAGE AREA

space to storage all materials and final works done in “The Shell of the Commons”.

LANDSCAPE STRUCTURES

mobile and adaptable structures that allow change organized and developed by the users. Allowing the generation of different typology of spaces.

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

01 arrival materials and cnc machines.
02 beginning of main structures.
03 scaffolding and continuation of main structures.
04 arrival of timber prefab. panels and asamblage.
05 final houses (accomodation area).
